I love sharing my enthusiasm for writing and illustrating with preK-6th graders! In-person or virtual, my fun, interactive, and educational school visit programs give all students the opportunity to see the writer and illustrator in themselves—leaving them confident and inspired to create their own books!

I'm also happy to provide a custom visit tailored to your needs and writing/illustration workshops for small or large groups.

"We were so lucky to have Laura Smetana visit our school and created an engaging experience for our young learners. She read them a story, shared her inspiration behind her books and took time to teach our students how to draw images from her book! The kids were SO excited to meet and draw with such a talented author and illustrator. Thank you, Laura, for sharing your beautiful books and being an inspiration for our students!"

"We hosted Laura at Liberty Elementary. She presented to all K-5th classes during the day. All of our students loved learning about the process of writing and illustrating books. She also returned that evening for our family night event where she interacted with our families. Her activities and presentations were amazing. The teachers, students, and families absolutely loved the experience. We loved the experience and definitely recommend you invite her to your school for a visit!"

Christie Milen, Media Specialist, Liberty Elementary, Plainfield, IL

"We were so fortunate to have Laura Smetana visit Washington School to share her writing and illustrating process with all of our K-5 students!  Laura adapted each presentation to suit the age and needs of our students and was responsive to each grade level. Every grade level was completely engaged during their time with Laura.  Students are still talking about things “the author” taught them, using their inspiration notebooks, and making plans for publishing their own stories.  We loved Laura and strongly encourage you to invite her to your school!"

"Laura came to Gower West Elementary School and presented to our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classes. I highly recommend having Laura for a school visit!"

"K-3 teachers and/or librarians - if you are looking to host an amazing author visit, Laura Smetana will not disappoint. As she explained her process in writing and publishing Little Squiggle's Lake Adventure, students were enthralled by her presentation. Laura's kind, warm demeanor provided students an opportunity to see an author in themselves. I received so many compliments from staff after Laura presented but my favorite compliments came from the students who raved about how nice she was. I can't thank her enough!"

—-Gina H., K-2 Librarian, Darien, Illinois

"Laura Smetana visited Briar Glen Elementary School and spoke with our first graders and kindergartners about how her real life adventure with her son inspired her story Little Squiggle's Lake Adventure. Students got to listen to a fun and relatable story, learn about the writing process, and even create their own drawing of Little Squiggle guided by Laura's patient instruction. I've already had several students ask to check out Laura's books, and teachers have reported that students have been doodling Little Squiggle on their papers in their free time! Laura definitely made a big impact for our first graders and kindergarteners this week and we loved hosting her!"

—Kelly Baumgartner, Briar Glen Library Media Center Director, Wheaton, IL

"My class thoroughly enjoyed our read aloud with Laura. The students were highly engaged with the story and hearing all about Laura's writing process. I highly recommend it!"
